About BLAKSTAR
BLAKSTAR is a brooklyn-born gender non-conforming playwright, poet, painter and performance artist. As a child of Jamaican immigrants, BLAKSTAR developed a unique perspective on life while growing up in New York City. That perspective is woven into their work which primarily focuses on dismantling the power structures built up around gender, race, and religion to achieve true liberation. They take inspiration from Marcus Garvey, who championed the idea that Afrikans of the diaspora should return to Afrika to find freedom aboard Garvey's famous Blackstar Liner ship. BLAKSTAR has no ships, or even a rowboat, but hopes that their art can at least bring all people's minds back to the enlightenment of a pre-colonization Afrika.
At HB Studio, located in the West Village, they studied playwriting and voice acting. They currently serve as Editor-in-Chief of Lime Lime Magazine. You can find them at their studio in Brooklyn, New York-- although they never stay in one place for too long, for there's so much in the world to see!
